Nerding Out: AMVs

Ugh, I feel like I’m utterly brain dead. I keep procrastinating on my Dante paper, and instead I’m doing the worst thing I can think of…

Watching AMVs. I mean, some of them are bloody brilliant, but honestly-if I’m going to waste valuable time, why not waste it on something more…productful? That is a word, isn’t it? Anyway, I thought I’d share some of them with you…anyone that cares…

Oh, I’ve also been watching more skits. They’re sorta like a black hold that takes over my life from time to time…that sounds so pathetic. I love Cupcake Cosplay though, their costumes are always gorgeous as are their performances. Can anyone possibly tell me what song they used?

Honestly, I don’t know how I get on this side of Youtube. Or this one.

Just Some Great Quotes (Movies/Anime/Books)

I know no one cares, but hey, this is my blog. I can post naked pictures of myself if I want…though, that would definitely scare away the kiddies.

I just really felt like posting some of the best quotes I’ve read, some recently and some not.

“This is what ruling is, lying on a bed of weeds ripping them out before they strangle you in your sleep.”
-Cersei Lannister (Game of Thrones)

“Everything that you wanted I have done. You asked that the child be taken. I took him. You cowered before me, I was frightening. I have reordered time. I have turned the world upside down, and I have done it all for you!”
-Jareth (Labyrinth)

“You know what the sun looks like? Like he slit his wrists in a bathtub and the blood is all over the water. And the moon is just watching. She’s just watching him die. She must have driven him to it.”
-Tithe (Holly Black)

“And pleasant is the Faerie land,
Though an eerie tale to tell.
Aye, at the end of seven years…
We pay a tithe to Hell.

-Tam Lin

“Trust the wolves, but do not tell them where
you are going.”
-Instructions (Neil Gaiman)

“Alright, one more time. Let’s blow some shit up!”

“I’m the one you love, but not the one you fall in love with.”
-What’s Past is Prologue

“One night Confucius dreamt that he was
taken to visit the damned in hell.
He was very surprised to see that hell
was a beautiful banqueting room…
with the damned
sitting around the table,
groaning under the weight of the most
delicious food he had ever seen.
They were allowed to eat anything they
liked, but they had to use chopsticks,
and the chopsticks
were five foot long.
The damned were starving,
staring in agony
at the uneaten food before them,
knowing that even with all eternity
in which to solve the problem,
it could not be done.
And then Confucius
is taken to heaven.
And heaven is an identical
banqueting hall…
full of delicious food.
The people around the tables
are happy and well-fed,
but they, too,
must obey the same rule.
The food can only be eaten with
chopsticks that are five foot long.
Only in heaven,
they’re feeding each other.”
-The Wisdom of Crocodiles

“If I don’t wield the sword, I can’t protect you
If I keep wielding the sword, I can’t embrace you.”
-Bleach:Right Arm of the Giant (Tite Kubo)

Two Bad Ass Songs

Anyone here watch Ghost Ship once upon a time? Well if you did, there’s a 95% chance that your favorite scene was the same as mine-the massacre scene. If you know what I’m talking about, then you must remember how cool that song was, right? Well, even if you have no idea what I’m babbling on about, here it is- My Little Box by John Frizzell (who, by the way, also did the soundtrack for Legion):

This song is just so…I don’t know, words can’t really describe it. That, and if you have good bass, you could pop out some Ecstasy and open a nightclub in your room easy enough.

The other song isn’t really that bad ass, but I thought it was sort of pretty. It’s one of the songs featured in The Hunger Games, Abraham’s Daughter by Arcade Fire:

I Love This CGI:Movie Review on Legion

I just finished watching Legion, and you know what? I thought it was pretty damn awesome. If you haven’t watched it, here’s a small summary:

Scott Stewart’s supernatural thriller Legion, scripted by Peter Schink, concerns a group of strangers in an out-of-the-way eatery who become the first line of defense when God, believing the human race is no longer worthy of Him, decides to end their existence. This motley crew’s only spiritual ally is the archangel Michael, played by Paul Bettany.

Kinky, no? Okay, well maybe not, but Paul Bettany sure is:

Isn’t he just scrumptious? I think it’s more or less the accent and tattoo’s that turn me on, but hey, I’m allowed to be attracted to men twice my age. Isn’t that right, Hugh Jackman? Moving along, the movie definitely brought interesting characters to the table. A confused woman carrying mankind’s savior in her womb, a hic who’s not the sharpest tool in the shed but loves unconditionally, a rebellious daughter and her two upper-class parents…you know, I’m not making this sound non-stereotypical. Now that I think it over, some of the characters are rather generic, but they’re not boring, and there are little twists to their personalities. The plot itself is an engaging take on the apocalypse, though there a few plot holes I found to be disconcerting.

There’s not a lot of witty dialogue, I’d probably only give the movie itself a 6/10, but it was worth the watch. If anything, the one reason to see this is to take in the kick-ass CGI wings and armor the angels wear-it’s absolutely gorgeous.

Meh, this is the best picture I could find, but it doesn’t do the wings any justice.

I don’t know what’s up with the biblical/horror genre, but I’ve been totally into it lately. If anyone has any great suggestions, I’d love to hear them…no one’s going to comment, are they?

Can Anyone Say Amazing?

I can. I just thought I should spread her fame just a tad bit more:

It’s a cover of The Hanging Tree from The Hunger Games series. It was put together by the talented Adriana (aka adrisaurus), and I have to say, it’s quite haunting. Her other covers are pretty good, but I maintain this one’s her best.

Fantastic Korean Movie

I just finished watching The Man from Nowhere, a South Korean film, and it was absolutely amazing! It has got to be one of the best movies I’ve ever seen, which says a lot coming from Kristen Starling’s daughter (which means nothing to you all, of course). I’m going to follow this tangent for a moment. My mother, while being a raving mad harpee, is well versed in the cinematic world.  I remember one day when I was in 8th grade, I’d decided to count how many movies she owned just out of curiosity-I ended up counting 553. And the worst part was, I’d seen them all save about 25 of them.

Since then, I’ve seen probably double that. So, when I say this movie was one of the best I’ve seen, it has to contend with a lot of others. Here’s a little summary:

A quiet pawnshop keeper with a violent past takes on a drug- and organ trafficking ring in hope of saving the child who is his only friend.

Cute, right? The actor for the protagonist, Bin Won, is mind-blowing in this film. His eyes captivated me in each scene. They were just so expressive, reflecting all of the character’s experience and restrained anger. And his character is the silent badass type, which just adds to the awesomeness of the fight sequences. Not only that, but the little girl is adorable and quite the little punk.

Also, there are some characters that have a deep complexity to them, such as one of the hired guns for the antagonist. The relationships in this movie are so interesting and well developed, which is a breath of fresh air from the recent American movies that have come out. I’m not saying American films bite, but some of the more recent ones have left much to be desired. For me at least.

Anyway, I highly recommend this movie. I think I might do my Film analysis on this one. I’ll just sprinkle some of my favorite screenshots…

Five Great FanFics

I think I might’ve mentioned this, but I read a lot. And when I say a lot, I mean too much. People say that you can never read too much, but that’s total bullshit. Reading can be a disease, taking over your life until all you do is sit in a corner day after day until your eyes begin to roll back into your skull and you fall out of your comfy-chair in convulsions.

The melodramatic is just too delicious to pass up.

Anyway, many of my fictional journeys have been in the company of fanfiction. I don’t want to admit how much I’ve actually read, but let’s just leave it at too much…again. I’ve come across a few that are particularly amazing, and while they have a handful of hiccups, they’re absolutely worth the read.  I’m not going to list all of my favorites, but I figure I’ll at least throw five out to you.

Warning: Most of these contain at least a dash of romance.

  1. Nowhere to Remain
: Obi-Wan was the perfect Jedi Knight: dignified, detached, possessing an almost courtly sense of propriety. But you would be wrong, if you thought he never loved – in secret, in his heart, he loved a love to move the stars. Sabe/Obi-Wan.
    (Star Wars – Rated: T – English – Drama/Romance – Chapters: 16 – Words: 56,771 – Reviews: 62 – Updated: 5-27-11 – Published: 7-19-08 – Obi-Wan K. & Handmaidens – Complete)

Review: This is one of those fic’s that could have actually happened. Carryon14 captures the characters of Star Wars and that of her own take on Sabe perfectly, and when I say perfectly, I mean it. She paints Sabe in all sorts of colors that, in the movies, she was totally without (but she was a side-character, so what do you expect?). She’s portrayed as strong-willed, particularly wise, and utterly adorable handmaiden. The plot doesn’t revolve around romance, but hints at it a few times in between the major events that play out in the first movie. The ending, while somber, is realistic and relatively happy.Link: Nowhere to Remain

  2. All My Heroes
Summary: After collecting a bounty, Boba Fett is confronted with the only person to ever stow away aboard Slave I, and soon is caught up in much more than he bargained for… Pre Ep. IV.
    (Star Wars – Rated: T – English – Sci-Fi/Adventure – Chapters: 12 – Words: 39,105 – Reviews: 82 – Updated: 4-16-10 – Published: 1-11-10 – Boba Fett – Complete)

Review: Unlike the others, this has no romance whatsoever. This, just like NTR, captures the Star Wars characters very well, though the only one of worthy mention is Boba Fett. The plot involves a little girl who’s running from the Empire because of who her parents are, and ends up forming a rather interesting and realistic bond with the bounty hunter. The fic is pretty short, there are 3 short but engaging climaxes, and the ending is perfect. I’m a total sucker for Fett, so any Boba Fett lovers should definitely read this.Link: All My Heroes

  3. Once Upon a Time
Summary: Wolves in human skin. A Beast and a lost maiden. A sanctuary in an oncoming storm. A prince of Elven blood. Sacrifices, debts, honor, and oaths. Ten long, beautiful years, and all the stories that fall within them.
    (Hellboy – Rated: M – English – Romance/Fantasy – Chapters: 50 – Words: 570,048 – Reviews: 436 – Updated: 12-24-11 – Published: 6-23-09 – Prince Nuada)

Review: Holy shit, this fic is long. It is reallylong…but worth it, especially if you’re into detail-overloads and dark romance. The plot is deeper than Dostoevsky, the characters LA Knight has created are spectacular and uber creative, and often overlooked, this story actually takes time for small interactions that develop the characters and their relationships. LA Knight takes extreme care in establishing Nuada and the OC’s feelings for each other, as well as listing all the references at the end of each chapter. She uses a butt-ton of fairytale-related references, including both folktales and modern novels (such as Tithe by Holly Black), so expect to get a lesson in Lore-101.  Some criticism: sometimes the descriptions become repetitive and overplayed, as do the emotions that simmer between the OC and Nuada. There is some aspect of religion, which is strangely refreshing at times, that might irritate some readers, depending on your own sensitivity.Link: Once Upon a Time

  4. Vespertine
Summary: Two enemies strike a bargain to save what they both hold dear. He will reveal a truth that shakes her beliefs, drawing her into a web of lies and betrayal. She will offer the redemption for which he never hoped and show him how to be human again. ItaSaku.
    (Naruto – Rated: M – English – Drama/Romance – Chapters: 15 – Words: 125,064 – Reviews: 1910 – Updated: 2-22-10 – Published: 3-25-09 – Itachi U. & Sakura H. – Complete)

Review: You know, the only fics I would read were ones with OCs until I read this. It’s all romance, but very real romance. It’s really surprising how well Cynchick captured Itachi’s personality, as is how she developed the plot out of completely believable circumstances. This is by far the best romance for any anime fic I’ve ever read: the writing is mature as are the facets of the preexisting characters Cynchick reveals. Just check out her bio, it basically screams BAMF.Link: Vespertine

  5. Silver Lining
Summary: Sequel to Perception. Eight years ago they said goodbye forever. Now, when they have both lost everything, fate has thrown them together again in the most unlikely of ways. DeiSaku.
    (Naruto – Rated: M – English – Romance/Drama – Chapters: 15 – Words: 126,010 – Reviews: 1368 – Updated: 2-19-08 – Published: 10-5-07 – Deidara & Sakura H. – Complete)

Review: I didn’t like the prequel to this (Perception). You gotta read it to understand this sequel, and while I like the way she portrays both Sakura and Deidara (and especially Kisame) in this, I really didn’t like her Itachi. It was to be expected that he was characterized the way he was considering where she lead the plot, but the first installment just isn’t one of my favorites. However, Silver Liningis a fun read, I didn’t stop until I finished with the epilogue. I sorta get the feeling that Cynchick is the Nora Roberts of Fanfiction, minus the overwhelming amount of smut Roberts usually plops into most of her books (though, there is some sexual content). Well, there is this one series by her that’s completely awesome…but I’ll save that for another post.Link:

Anyway, that’s it for now. There’s only so much blogging I can do before my ass starts to go numb.
